Otter Delight

I'm not sure why the otter is my favorite animal (after dogs of course!). I think it has something to do with the way they combine furious shell-cracking (hard work) with lazy lounging, all while floating on their backs. Ever since I was a kid, trips to aquariums and zoos meant spending hours in front of the sea or river otter exhibit, watching them slip into and out of the water gracefully. The rest of the family would leave me there and pick me up on the way out because there wasn't really anything else on exhibit that I wanted to see! Maybe the penguins.

These etsy artists have captured the essence of the adorable, feisty, endangered animals. Just click on any image to be taken to its etsy listing.

ETT Shop of the Week ~ In My Head Studios

Vickie Porter, of In My Head Studios, has a passion for paper. "I love everything about paper - the way it feels, the sounds it makes, the colors and textures. It has dimension, and I try to use that in my work." A self-professed perfectionist with an eye for detail, Vickie's exquisitely crafted pendants create miniature spaces that call to mind old letters, or the box of special treasures you had as a child.

Using scrabble tiles and upcycled vintage dominos as the base for her pendants allows Vickie to "create something new from something old" and the addition of beads, dangles and charms give the beautiful pieces texture and movement.

Vickie is also leader of the 175-member Etsy Twitter Team. "Running the team is truly a joy and a blessing to be part of! The members have created such a close community. I'm really proud of that."

In My Head Studios is happy to do custom pendants. "If you dream it, I can do it!" and ships jewelry all over the world. " I guarantee you will love wearing your pendant as much as I enjoyed creating it!"

Ciao! Sumiko Shop ~ ETT Shop of the Week

Evelyn Palazzin (from Italy), of Sumiko Shop, creates jewelry and accessories for women. Her shop is filled with lovely items that include necklaces, brooches and pouches.

“I have always had a passion to create, to recycle items, and to invent and process things from scratch. I don’t consciously think of myself as an artist but as a person who loves to create and learn new techniques. I spend countless hours searching for new materials and findings for my jewelry. It’s inevitable to get an idea or inspiration after such intense consideration of materials. Sometimes just studying them creates images of the completed item in my mind.”

You can follow her on Twitter and read her blog Sumiko Shop.

Special Offer for the Week: Free shipping worldwide. Mention “Etsy Twitter” in Message to Seller (when you make purchases from Sumiko Shop) and shipping will be refunded.

This week’s shop has extremely lovely handmade items. Claire Elizabeth Annals (her maiden name was Rhodes), of Rhodes Annals Designs, sells bags, hats, crocheted purses, knitted scarves and cowls. She also sells some of her sister’s jewelry and vintage patterns.

“Each item is 'lovingly' handmade, by that I mean that I enjoy making them and like to imagine how they will be used by their new owner. I am always on the look out for new ideas, and if I wouldn't use an item, it doesn't go into my shop. I use the best materials I can source, and I am always on the look out for unusual yarn and fabric patterns.”

Emmakat ~ Etsy Twitter Team Shop of the Week

Here is what Emma K. Nolan of Emmakat jewelry & accessories has written in her etsy shop profile:

"Handmade Crafts have been a passion of mine since I was a kid. I like to learn as much as I can about many crafts because I am very excited by the creative process. I have a particular interest in two mediums - Paper goods and Jewelry.

Beaded jewelry making is a hobby I shared with my mother as a kid and has outlasted my interest in other crafts because of the ease with which I can quickly explore ideas. My focus is to create unique pieces that are, hopefully, not quite like what you would see anywhere else. I spend a lot of time developing ideas, often sketching them out. But sometimes ideas come in the process of creation as well.

Similarly I find an ease in working with paper because of my training as an architect. I'm exploring working with both gocco printing to develop a graphic design style and with construction of 3-dimensional objects for use in the home. I strive to minimize waste and try to plan my projects accordingly. Additionally, I use paper with recycled content and consider environmental issues when it is possible to do so.

I think you will see the influence of my education in architecture in most of my items, I'm drawn to simple and bold patterns and forms.

Other hobbies that I'm still developing and hope to one day be able to share include: knitting, sewing and developing my jewelry making into metal work including copper enameling."

Emmakat is the featured Etsy Twitter Team shop of the week.

Spotlight on Angel Kisses Jewelry

Angel Kisses Jewelry is a collective of related artists. Michelle Aguilar, her mother Sherry Hadley, and sister Annette Crews create one of kind jewelry pieces using semi-precious stones, glass beads and their own handmade polymer clay beads and pendants. Many of their creations are available as full sets of matching earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Their unique pieces are beautiful, stylish and organic.

From March 2 - 8, 10% of all proceeds from sales will go to support HIV Positive women in Addis Kidan, Ethiopia, through the Good Samaritan Organization. Sherry personally visits this organization in Ethiopia to ensure the funds go directly to the women. Her next visit to Ethiopia is scheduled for March 16, 2009.

For all these reasons, Angel Kisses Jewelry has been selected to be the etsy Twitter Team's Store of the Week.
