Opinions Please!

I have noticed more and more on etsy (the wonderful online shopping site for handmade, vintage and craft supplies) where I have my jewelry shop, threepeats, that the "background" of choice for most item photos is bright white. Items photographed this way make it to the front page and treasuries more often. I have gotten gentle suggestions from etsy teammates to try it and so I have.

Let me start by saying that I like the natural stone background I have been shooting my jewelry against. In my mind, it "fits" the philosophy of my shop - that I recycle vintage materials into modern pieces. But I am willing to change with the times (although re-taking more than 500 pictures will take some time). So, readers, I'd appreciate your take on this. Please leave a comment on this post and tell me whether you prefer the white background or the stone background for my Jumping Through Hoops Dangle Earrings. Tell me why if you have some more time!

  1. Actually, I notice most of the items that make front page (at least vintage items) have some wood base! I do like the white background as it seems to show off your earrings better (very cute by the way)! They seem to blend into the stone background.

  2. I agree; I think the stone background is too similar in color to your earrings, and the white background really makes them stand out. I like that your white background has some shadow and depth though, and is not totally flat. Good luck!

  3. How about a white concrete background? That way you can have both!

  4. That Judy is SO SMART! Before I read her comment directly above, I was going to say that I like your current background. I don't think that the stark white background is as compatible with your work and what it represents. I'd definitely try a stone textured background in a white, off white, ecru or fawn color.

  5. I like the stone, but I think the white back ground should be adjusted before deciding for sure what is best.

  6. Although the stone background is more interesting, I think the white one shows off the item better. If not a white concrete background, as suggested above, you could try shooting on a distressed white-washed wood.

  7. Suzanne, the white background shows off the features of your jewelry much better. I agree with Judy, get a stone texture that doesn't compete with your item.

If you're doing the white, I'm learning about white balance before shooting and editing in PhotoShop. Experiment!

  8. Hey, a textured white is a fun idea. Like a board painted white. The white certainly does make your earrings pop.

  9. I think the white background shows off the earrings more (so cute, by the way), while they blend in more with the stone background. That said, I agree with others that a lighter, natural stone or textured background might combine your desire for the organic and the lighter background that makes it to the front page.

  10. Your earrings appear to have copper findings on the white background and brass on the stone one. Personally I like the stone background but agree that a white one will get you in more treasuries these days; it's difficult to handle white because it turns blue easily, at least in my pics. Whatever you choose, your earrings are great!
